About Calm Dental
GUM DISEASE
Most Americans don’t look forward to visiting the dentist. They are terrified of what will happen in the dental chair. Even when
they need preventive treatment they think, if it doesn’t hurt why I need to worry about it. We, as dental field professionals, have
a different view. We see patients in all stages of life and are able to predict the expectations of what will happen to their teeth if
no treatment is completed. A recent study describes the association between heart disease and gum disease to be at least
as strong as the linkage of heart disease to cholesterol, body weight or smoking.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Periodontal disease (bone loss) is found in over 60% of our patients and loved ones. Bone loss is a disease that does not
hurt. If we fail to educate our patients they will possibly have to live the last third of their lives in dentures. As health care
providers we know that although bone loss is painless, it progresses silently. It may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly.
Studies have shown that more than half of all people over the age of 18 have at least the early stages of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease may increase your risk for a variety of health risks, including:
1.   Weakened Immune System
2.   Diabetes
3.   Stroke
4.   Lung Disease
5.   Preterm, low birth weight babies
6.   Respiratory Disease
7.   Osteoporosis
8.   Gastric Ulcer

The American Dental Association cites early warning signs of periodontal disease:
•        Gums that are red, swollen or tender
•        Permanent Teeth that are loose or separating
•        Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
•        Pus between gums and teeth when gums are pressed.
•        Persistent bad breathe.

Your Dental Team can help you better understand periodontal disease and how you can prevent it. They can quickly and
painlessly check the condition of your teeth and gums during your recall appointments. Remember that even healthy looking
teeth may have gum disease. Only your Dentist and Hygienist can tell with a simple exam. By keeping regular appointments
with your dental team you can help increase your chance for a long and happy life.
